Ethex: A place for Community Energy to scale
Ethex is a trusted positive impact investing platform and service provider to the Community Energy sector, having supported organisations for the last decade to raise finance and manage investors effectively.
To date we’ve raised £91 million invested into UK community energy projects, from our community of 27,000+ and finance partners. Not only that, but 98% of all projects in the sector delivered against their projected impact and financial goals.
As the Community Energy sector continues to mature, there is significant potential to unlock even more people-powered capital through Ethex, and we are here to help.
We work closely with organisations to actively attract and manage a wider investor audience, providing tailored, hands-on service support for one-off and repeat offers including marketing.
What types of projects do we raise finance for?
Ethex offers bridging, blended finance, or full-raise solutions for organisations seeking to raise £250,000 or more for viable UK community energy projects that deliver:
- Positive social and environmental impact
- Benefits for the communities they serve
- Fair, transparent returns for investors
Projects can raise finance through:
- Bonds
- Shares — including community shares, which are typically withdrawable
Our process
Raising finance through Ethex is designed to be straightforward and supported:
- Application: A community organisation or project applies to raise finance on Ethex.
- Assessment & approval: If the proposal meets Ethex’s criteria, it is reviewed by the Investment Committee. Due diligence typically takes around six weeks.
- White-glove marketing support. Once approved, the offer is handed to the Ethex marketing team for tailored, hands-on support on messaging and communications, community outreach, press distribution and telling your story to the right audiences,
- Launch
The investment offer goes live with its own dedicated page on www.ethex.org.uk - Distribution & integration
The opportunity is shared with Ethex’s 27k + investor network, with other funding sources integrated where relevant.
Ongoing investor management
Ethex also provides a registry service, managing investors on behalf of the projects we support – reducing administrative burden and ensuring compliance and good governance.

Ethex has been funded to date through member partners including CO2Sense and the Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF), alongside reinvestment in 2025 from long-standing backer Friends Provident Foundation.
We also benefit from endorsement of founding investors, including Barrow Cadbury Trust, Better Society Capital, and Esmée Fairbairn Foundation.
