  • The next phase of community energy: supermarkets and warehouses

    Date: 4 December 2025

    Time: 12:30-13:30

    Location: Online

This event hosted by the Energy Learning Network and Ethex, will explore how community-funded solar can transform supermarkets into sustainability anchors: cutting costs, reducing emissions, and giving customers the chance to co-own the clean energy infrastructure above their heads and beneath their feet.

Community Energy in the UK has already proven itself. Millions has been raised from communities to fund local solar and renewable projects. The first wave showed that communities are ready to invest in their own clean energy future.

Now comes the next phase: moving Community Energy into the heart of daily life. Where people shop, work, and travel. Supermarkets and warehouses are uniquely placed to lead this transformation. They dominate our skylines, power our food systems, and consume huge amounts of electricity during the day. Exactly when solar produces it. But today, only 5% of UK warehouses have solar installed.

This event will explore how community-funded solar can transform supermarkets into sustainability anchors: cutting costs, reducing emissions, and giving customers the chance to co-own the clean energy infrastructure above their heads and beneath their feet.

    What we’ll explore

    • Solar at scale – Why supermarket and warehouse rooftops are the perfect sites for affordable, high-impact solar.
    • Beyond rooftops – EV charging, shared mobility, battery storage, and circular economy systems powered by community investment.
    • Customers as co-owners – How Community Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) allow shoppers to fund and benefit from clean energy.
    • A national opportunity – The role of supermarkets in scaling community energy from niche projects to a mainstream movement.
