National map

The most comprehensive dataset of community energy organisations and projects in England

Our national map shows locations of renewable energy generation but also some energy advice and energy efficiency services. The map has been widely used by policy makers, politicians and political parties, think-tanks, campaigns, and by the CEE policy and advocacy team. It is regularly updated and we encourage members to continue to add their data and project sites via the State of the Sector data portal to keep the map relevant and evidence the scale and impact of the community energy sector.

Guidance on how to use the map

The map contains multiple layers, which can be viewed separately or together by selecting from the menu on the left of the map.

As well as the CEE and Rural Community Energy Fund (RCEF) project datasets, there are also additional area or political boundaries which may be useful to you:

  • Projects – Click to see community energy project locations across the country (1 layer)
  • MP constituencies  – Click to see political party or representative data for the area (1 layer)
  • Regional boundaries – Click to see the relevant region or Net Zero Hub area (1 layer)
  • Local authority boundaries – Click to see Unitary, District, and Metropolitan boundaries (1 layer)
  • DNO boundaries – Click to see distribution network operator boundaries (1 layer)
  • Community Energy Fund Awarded Projects – Click to see the location of projects awarded funding through the Community Energy Fund (CEF) (1 layer)
  • All layers are optional to click on or off.
  • Markers and pins showcase community energy locations
  • Projects are colour coded by technology type for easy of viewing
  • You can also search for specific projects by name through the search tool.
  • Click on pins to find additional basic and contact information for projects
  • You could use pin counts and screenshots of the map as evidence for funding

How can I add my data to the map?

If you wish to add data to the map and have not yet accessed our data portal, please contact us to request access.

If you have already submitted data in our portal, you can log into your organisation’s account and submit new information about your new projects and community energy sites which will then be uploaded to the map.

The Community Heat Development Unit (with which CEE is partnered) conducted a site search across mainland GB to identify the most feasible locations where a centralised heat network incorporating large air source heat pumps and on-site renewable electricity generation could be developed.
