How SSEN DSO teams can support community energy schemes
Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) delivers a safe, secure and reliable supply of electricity to over 3.9 million homes and businesses across central southern England and the north of Scotland. As a network operator, they’ve got a key role to play in enabling the transition to a smarter, more flexible, net zero energy system – and SSEN recognises that community energy has an important part to play in making that transition fair, local and inclusive.

What SSEN DSO function does
SSEN’s Distribution System Operator (DSO) function helps communities understand and navigate the electricity system before they apply to connect. SSEN do this by improving access to network data, sharing insight on local network conditions, supporting future network planning, and helping stakeholders understand where flexibility and other smart solutions may play a role. In simple terms, their DSO helps create the visibility, information and coordination needed for community energy projects to make informed decisions.
Are you thinking about a community energy project?

SSEN want to make it easier for community energy groups to engage with us and move their projects forward.
They know that finding the right location for your scheme, planning how you’re going to make money and understanding where and when to engage with your electricity network can be daunting.
Our DSO teams are here to help you with:
- Access to clearer network information and open data tools
- Understanding how flexibility and network reinforcement might look in your area
- Events, resources and engagement to build confidence and capability
- A more joined-up experience across DSO, connections and their wider distribution network companies
- Collaboration with sector partners to improve support for community energy nationally, influencing policy.
SSEN know community energy groups can bring together deep local insight, trusted relationships and practical ambition. Their role is to complement that with network expertise, accessible information and the right support at the right time.
If you’d like to speak to them about a community energy project, you can contact them at [email protected] and a member of their DSO team will be in touch.
